On May 14th, 2009, in a public announcement made at Scalo’s Restaurant and attended by Mayor Martin Chavez, State Senator Cisco McSorley, State Representative Gail Chasey, Councilman Rey Garduño and members of Bill Richardson’s administration, as well as local community leaders, business owners and residents, Nob Hill Albuquerque joined 20 other New Mexico communities by successfully being designated an emerging Main Street community by the New Mexico Main Street Program (www.NMMAINStreet.org).
The Main Street Program is an initiative begun by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1980 to revitalize business districts of national and regional economic and cultural value. With this designation comes technical, organizational, and logistical support from the national and state Main Street Centers but the direction and operation of the organization is local. The local organizations must adhere to a proven, comprehensive methodology to revitalize their district in order to maintain Main Street status. It is a common-sense way to address the variety of issues and problems that face traditional business districts. More information on this methodology can be found at http://www.preservationnation.org/main-street/about-main-street/.
The impetus for Main Street designation for Nob Hill originated through a consortium of concerned citizens made up of Nob Hill neighbors, business and property owners, and members of the Nob Hill Business Association and the Nob Hill Neighborhood Association designated as the Nob Hill Main Street Steering Committee. Its efforts were supported by a resolution passed by the Albuquerque City Council.
The Nob Hill Main Street area is designated to run from Girard to Washington and from Copper to Silver. The organization has assumed the http://rt66central.com/ website, currently maintained by the NHBA and established through their efforts of the Nob Hill-Highland Renaissance Corporation, and will post updates and information for the community as it meets its organizational milestones. Utilizing the comprehensive "MainStreet Four Points Approach," the Nob Hill Steering Committee is selecting a Governing Board. Four committees must also be established under the program’s approach to address the economic development needs of the district. Those four areas are design, economic positioning, organization and promotion, all of which help the district support economic diversity, create infrastructure and address historic and cultural preservation issues. The organization is required to hire an Executive Director to ensure that the organization is sustainable and viable, and likely will eventually add a part time staff.
With the hard work neighbors and businesses put into the Nob Hill Highland Sector Plan the Main Street designation is another step toward revitalizing the community, improving the quality of life and keeping it a viable and vital place to shop, work and live. The success of the program will depend on citizen participation and volunteers. The Nob Hill Neighborhood Association encourages our fellow neighbors to volunteer and participate.
